In March, I saw Sarah Klang in concert at The Morrocan Lounge in Los Angeles. She opened her set with “Ghost Killer” and closed with “Beautiful Woman.” Her voice embodies yearning in an intoxicating way, and the show was so enjoyable.
The venue was intimate yet packed. The stage was bathed in blue, pink, and purple light. Sarah is playful, vulnerable, and frank. You could feel the audience rising up and responding to that energy. She told anecdotes between songs throughout the one-hour set, speaking in a soft Swedish accent.
A silky pink tapestry hung behind the drummer, and the microphone was decorated in a chiffon-like fabric. Sarah wore cowboy boots and a makeshift skirt pinned together in the back and tied with more chiffon. The “skirt” had a worn, frayed tassel hem that dragged on the floor. Her pink gem tooth glittered when she sang, and she danced with her fingers, closing her eyes, tilting her face up to the lights.
Often, when I go to concerts, I’m exceptionally aware of my aches and pains. Standing for an extended period brings out lower back pain, hip tightness, and a stiff neck. I end up shifting my weight, stretching and twisting for relief, and masking it all as dance moves. I’m also incapable of letting go of time. I think about how long the concert will go and estimate the end time.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing so many of my favorite artists in concert, but this was the first time in a long time that my body was quiet. I’m thankful for whatever transpired internally and externally that helped me experience Sarah Klang in such a peaceful and open state.
After the concert, I went to the restroom and waited for my partner in the hallway. The timing aligned. Sarah Klang exited the stage door and glided past me. I thanked her for her performance, and she held my elbow and thanked me for coming.
Opening “Ghost Killer” Lyrics:
I was walking home, I saw your house
Big dark shadow in your window
No, wait, that's just me imagining things again
